MJ Torrecampo “Away Back in the Long Ago” at C+N Gallery CANEPANERI, Milan

A solo exhibition by the American artist of Philippine origin MJ Torrecampo, born in 1992 in Manila and currently living and working in Orlando, Florida, USA. Opening on February 27, 2025, in Milan, Torrecampo’s exhibition marks her second solo presentation at the gallery and showcases a series of new works that delve deeply into the rich world of Philippine mythology. These works explore timeless themes such as cultural identity, the immigrant experience, and the complexities of family dynamics – subjects the artist addresses through a contemporary lens and a bold artistic approach.

In “Away Back in the Long Ago,” Torrecampo reimagines traditional Philippine myths in a fresh visual language, blending elements of her Filipino heritage with a modern sensibility. Drawing inspiration from graphic novels, traditional Filipino art forms, and visual storytelling, she creates intricate compositions that both honor and reinterpret ancient folkloric tales. As Saša Bogojev, the author of the exhibition’s critical essay, observes, “Through her use of layered narratives and inventive compositions, Torrecampo brings new life to stories of the supernatural and sacred, making them resonate with contemporary concerns and experiences.”

Torrecampo’s works challenge the viewer to engage with these myths in a dynamic way. By adopting a distinctive overhead viewpoint and using non-traditional canvases that break from the conventional rectangle, she invites the audience into a world where time and space coexist within a single perspective. This unique approach allows the stories to unfold not just visually, but as complex, multilayered narratives that speak to universal themes of human connection, respect for nature, and the balance between opposing forces.

The exhibition will be on view until April 6, 2025, with special opening hours during Milan Art Week 2025. Visitors are encouraged to experience the exhibition’s rich tapestry of myth and memory, where Torrecampo’s inventive painting style brings a new dimension to ancient stories, merging the personal with the mythical in a truly contemporary way.
