The Asian Art Museum and Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco may turn to layoffs and reduced operating hours in order to meet the city’s budget reduction plan.
Expected layoffs in the General Services Administration’s fine arts and preservation units will reportedly leave the fate of many public works in limbo.
The museum will offer voluntary separation options or retirement as alternatives for its controversial plan to cut 47 staffers.
“At a time when workers’ rights are under attack nationwide, it is appalling to see AKG take a page from Elon Musk’s playbook,” said union organizer Casey Moore.
Workers now have until March 16 to make their voices heard as the museum awaits news of possible increased funding from the city.
Museum workers and union representatives urged the institution to explore alternatives before cutting nearly 50 full- and part-time staff.
