Contribute to a New Public Art Installation at the Brooklyn Navy Yard

The Brooklyn Navy Yard is now accepting submissions for the “What Shapes Our Brooklyn” project

In 2024, artist Phoebe Lo won an open call to create a public artwork for the Brooklyn Navy Yard responding to the theme “Our Brooklyn.” Her playful and colorful installation, a celebration of how the borough’s communities come together through work, social, and cultural life, will span Flushing Avenue between Clermont and Carlton Avenues from May 17 through November 2.

Brooklyn residents are now invited to contribute to this installation through an interactive art project by drawing a shape (either representational or abstract) symbolizing what the borough means to them. Submissions are due by April 27.

From the pool of entries, Lo will select several dozen to incorporate into her public art installation at the Navy Yard’s Building 92. The finished project will be revealed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s annual Design Day event on May 17.

Held in collaboration with the NYCxDESIGN Festival, this year’s Design Day theme, “Design is for Everyone,” highlights several industries of the future, including robotics, engineering, and technology. The event features an open house from 12 to 5pm, followed by the exclusive public art reveal from 5 to 8pm. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the commissioned artist and explore the groundbreaking design studios and manufacturing spaces across Navy Yard’s campus.

Submissions are free and easy. For more information, visit brooklynnavyyard.org/exhibits.
