Art Basel Hong Kong 2025 opened its VIP day on Wednesday, March 26th, and a slate of sales have been reported by galleries in attendance. The leading reported transaction from the day is a $3.5 million Yayoi Kusama work sold by David Zwirner (all sales are in US dollars).

This year’s edition of the fair features 242 galleries from 42 countries, the same number of exhibitors as last year. Running until March 30th, the fair is organized into three sections: Galleries, Discoveries, and Insights. The fair takes place at a pivotal moment for the Hong Kong art market, which has contended with an economic downturn in mainland China and declining auction results over the past year.

Initial reports on the ground at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, however, appeared to tentatively dispel some of the trepidation heading into the week. “It’s been a good start to the fair,” reported dealer Thaddaeus Ropac. “Admittedly, ahead of the fair we weren’t sure how it would go, but there is positive energy here—a sense of cautious optimism which is translating into sales. We’re seeing a bit more of an international attendance compared to the past couple of years too, with Europeans returning.”

Leading sales from Art Basel Hong Kong 2025

• In addition to the Kusama work, David Zwirner’s other reported sales included a work by Michaël Borremans for $1.6 million, a work by Elizabeth Peyton for $900,000, and a work by Felix Gonzalez-Torres for $900,000, among others.
• Hauser & Wirth’s reported sales were led by a Louise Bourgeois work for $2 million. The gallery also reported the sale of a Christina Quarles work for $1.35 million and a work by Avery Singer for $575,000, among others.
• Thaddaeus Ropac’s sales were led by a Georg Baselitz painting for €1.2 million ($1.29 million). Other sales reported by the gallery included a Daniel Richter painting for €420,000 ($453,380), a Lee Bul work for $190,000, and a Tom Sachs work for $160,000.
• White Cube’s sales were led by an Antony Gormley work for £500,000 ($644,646). The gallery also sold works by artists including Tracey Emin, Mona Hatoum, and Enrico David, among others.
• Lehmann Maupin’s sales were led by a work by Cecilia Vicuña for a price in the range of $350,000–$450,000. The gallery also sold a work by David Salle for $120,000, along with a work by Anna Park—whom the gallery announced representation of this week—for a price in the range of $40,000–$50,000.
• Kukje Gallery’s sales were led by a Park Seo-Bo work for a price in the range of $540,000–$648,000.The gallery also sold a work by Ha Chong-hyun for a price in the range of $390,000–$468,000, as well as works by Lee Seung-Jio, Kyungah Ham, and Kibong Rhee, among others.
• Kasmin reported the sale of a work by Ali Banisadr for $475,000. The gallery also sold a work by Mark Ryden for $275,000 along with works by Bosco Sodi, Alexis Ralaivao, Theodora Allen, and Lyn Liu, among others.
• Pace Gallery sold a work by Loie Hollowell for $450,000 and a painting by Kenneth Noland for $175,000. It also reported sales of works by artists including Li Hei Di and Alicja Kwade.
• Perrotin sold a work by Ali Banisadr for $350,000. It also sold works by Izumi Kato and Lynn Chadwick, among others.
• Berry Campbell Gallery sold a work by Lynne Drexler for $300,000. The gallery also sold a work by Yvonne Thomas for $175,000, as well as works by artists including Alice Baber and Elizabeth Osborne.
• Galleria Continua sold a work by Michelangelo Pistoletto for €350,000 ($377,214). It also sold a pair of works by Yoan Capote.
• Tina Kim Gallery sold a work by Pacita Abad for a price in the range of $250,000–$500,000. The gallery also sold works by Lee ShinJa and Ha Chong-Hyun, among others.
• MASSIMODECARLO sold a work by Jamian Juliano-Villani for a price in the range of $100,000–$120,000. It also reported the sale of works by artists including Dominique Fung, Xue Ruozhe, and Bodu Yang.
• Jessica Silverman’s sales were led by a work by Clare Rojas for $110,000. The gallery also sold works by Hayal Pozanti, Masako Miki, and Rupy C. Tut, among others.

Other notable sales from Art Basel Hong Kong 2025

• Ink Studio sold a work by Bingyi for $75,000. It also sold works by artists including Kang Chunhui, Xu Bing, and ChienYing Tseng.
• Vadehra Art Gallery sold works by Astha Butail, Zaam Arif, and Gauri Gill for prices in the range of $10,000–$20,000 apiece.
• P420 sold three works by Irma Blank for prices ranging from $22,000–$28,000 apiece.
• Sprüth Magers sold a pair of works by Hyun-Sook Song for €65,000 ($70,054) apiece.
