Barry McGee Curates Some “Chitty Figures” From the Bay Area Art Scene

Barry McGee Curates Some
Even when seeing Barry McGee’s works and curated installations in other cities around the world (recently the backroom at The Hole in Los Angeles), he brings the Bay Area with him. It’s unmistakably the Bay, and if you haven’t lived there or haven’t been there in years, you know walking into a Barry show there is a language that is of a particular place that is present aand omnipresent in the room. And now Barry has curated Chitty Figures, a group exhibition showcasing paintings, sculpture, and works on paper that showcases the Bay Area in its contemporary (and historic) place in the art world. The show is hosted at Berggruen Gallery, where Barry had a solo show last year.

Compositions are carefully constructed with their inhabitants in mind, methodically planned yet filled with paradoxes. One-point perspective draws attention center-stage while peripheral views fade.
