Fuco Ueda, a talented artist born in 1979 in the city of Yokohama, Japan, has made a remarkable mark in the world of contemporary art. She graduated from the Tokyo Polytechnic University of Arts Graduate School in 2003, where her artistic journey truly flourished. Drawing from the lush landscapes of her upbringing on a serene countryside farm, her artwork is rich with depictions of animals and plants, reflecting both her surroundings and her inner world. Surrounded more by the company of animals than by humans during her formative years, her deep connection to nature permeates her creative expression.

From an early age, Fuco’s passion for painting blossomed, leading her to art high school. Here, she honed her skills in oil painting, sculpture, Japanese painting, and design. Her thirst for knowledge led her to The College of Art and Design, where she refined her unique artistic voice.

Fuco Ueda’s Creative Technique & Inspiration

Fuco Ueda’s art is characterized by a warm, dreamlike quality that captures the imagination. She expertly employs a combination of acrylics and powdered mineral pigments on diverse surfaces, including paper, cloth, and wood. This meticulous choice of materials lends her pieces a refined delicacy and an ethereal softness, paying homage to traditional Japanese aesthetics.

Drawing inspiration from the rich heritage of Ukiyo-e prints and the groundbreaking works of Japanese female artists and writers, Fuco weaves a narrative that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking. She finds fascination in the manga scene, spotlighting the vibrant themes surrounding young girls in the 1970s. Her art indeed breathes life into imaginary springs.

Fuco depicts the brilliance of flora and fauna intertwines with vivid colors, creating enchanting landscapes.

In her paintings, Ueda portrays her often young girls in suggestive poses. Usually, she captures them in fleeting moments where time seems to stand still. She also always allows her imagination to guide her.

As her visions crystallize, she meticulously brings them to life with acrylic paint. One thing she often use is Gofun. This is an exquisite opaque white pigment derived from finely ground oyster shells, which adds an extraordinary depth and luminosity to her artworks.
